The more you work in this business, the more you realize: it’s truly a miracle we get any new stuff to watch.
ISAAC T.’S POST-NAB 2023 HIGHLIGHTS
NAB 2023 was special. Yeah, 100 years of NAB and such, but showing people our apps and seeing their faces light up with possibilities? That was special.
Hedge the Company, OffShoot the App
Hedge was once one app and our company’s namesake. Then the Hedge team built some more apps and acquired others. Now there’s Hedge the workflow company, and OffShoot, the app formerly known as Hedge.
Demoing OffShoot Pro’s upcoming S3 integrations (camera-to-cloud anyone?) was nifty, but showing our guests what OffShoot already does – verified transfers, MHLs, transfer presets, and Connect – was equally as eye-opening.
Workspaces in Mimiq - Avid Bin Locking for Any Storage
This is how a typical Mimiq demo would go.
Guest:
can you tell me about this Mimiq thing?
Me:
(Demos it in 5 minutes)
Guest:
(incredulously) that’s it?
Me:
that’s it! 🙂
Guest:
🤯
Over and over, Avid teams would see Mimiq, and immediately start rethinking their workflows. It was glorious.
And if you’re using a SAN (like Quantum StorNext), rejoice: Workspaces in Mimiq was built just for you.
PostLab With a Capital EL
It’s official: along with all of our other apps, PostLab is back to being camel-cased.
Even better, there was a surprise PostLab announcement during NAB; did you catch it?
▶️ (Scrub to 57:15)
Yes, we’re really working on the next generation of PostLab.
Yes, Event Locking for Final Cut Pro will be a part of it.
And, yes, we heard about Final Cut Pro for iPad at the same time as you. It’s on our radar; stay tuned. 😁
Post-Post NAB
We just released FoolCat 23.1 with support for Sony Venice X-OCN, Phantom CineRAW, ProRes RAW, and Canon Raw Light (CRM) plus major speed improvements when generating reports. Couple that with OffShoot’s FoolCat integration and you could make one click to rule them all.
Also, EditReady Server is available as an integration with an iconik Storage Gateway (ISG). Like Lucas (would’ve) said:
Finally, there’s Canister. LTO archiving was never this easy, and soon… Canister for Windows.
I wish I had some other interests to report from NAB, but I’m currently fixated on helping post-production teams work together from anywhere and I know everything else was well-reported on by others in the #PostChat realm.

A recent lunch time ritual is watching Light & Magic (AKA the story of ILM). Pure inspiration: youtu.be/QGs-5G3qV…
Another tip leading up to NAB 2023:
Can’t find your Hedge app’s license key? Can’t deactivate it since your computer was lost / stolen / returned as a rental after the shoot?
You can do it all from the Hedge License Manager!
It’s been a little over 3 years since I joined Hedge. It might sound corny, but reading Paul’s retrospective is equal parts thrilling, touching, and triumphant. I’m super proud to work alongside these people every day, and frequently find myself in awe of what they do.
Happy Hedge-iversary. 7️⃣ 🚀
Funny thing: Apple deprecated AFP all the way back in Mavericks, finally killed the server component in Big Sur, and yet… AFP shares are still faster, easier, and more stable than SMB on macOS.
Using AFP on your shared storage with Avid Media Composer? (Cue the John Cena theme) here’s… Mimiq… Proooo!
Have you tried EditReady’s Color Conversion? “What’s the big deal?”, you ask? 🤔 EditReady converts any RAW footage from ARRI, Sony, RED, or Blackmagic, into your chosen colorspace before applying the LUT. The result? Accurate and predictable color. 👌🏽
How about some tips leading up to NAB 2023?
For example, are you using Final Cut Pro in a remote workflow? Use Postlab’s built-in Sync client to distribute Motion Content among your Team. You can also share Effects and LUTs with Sync too!
THE FABELMANS… oh wow, THE FABELMANS.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you, Mr. Spielberg.
🍿🎞️
You may laugh, but the Casa Bonita revival sounds legit.
From the choice of Chef Dana Rodriguez to the language classes for team members – the love for the food, the place, and its team are for real.
Shout out to Matt Stone and Trey Parker.
I know I’ll never have a big following, but I logged back into Twitter to update the Mastodon URL in my profile, scrolled a bit, and… nope!
TBH I was rootin' for Eddie Hamilton’s work on Top Gun: Maverick, but Paul Rogers' acceptance speech for Film Editing is one of my favorites in recent years.
Every editor’s hope for every project / client: “I hope I did right by you.” 🎯 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Wow… The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse took the Oscar! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Also a huge win for remote postproduction workflows powered by LucidLink. 👌🏽
I know I sound like @tvaziri@mastodon.social out here, but man do I love movies. 🍿🎞️

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts looks like the best installment in a long time (if not ever), but a full-length feature like this fan film? 🤩

“My video editing app doesn’t do (whatever) so I’m switching to Resolve,” is the new, “My OS is terrible so I’m switching to Linux.”
Just watched S3:E1 of The Mandalorian and wondered, “How’s Shamook doing at ILM?”
Media Composer teams rejoice! MDVx (Media Database Viewer) received a quiet update in December 2022. Seems to be quite a few UI improvements and it’s Apple Silicon native. Get it! (It’s still 🆓! 🤯)
Friday Night Lights is an OK movie, but a dynamite TV series.
The pilot is a 10, the theme song is a 10, and even the ending is satisfying.
Also, Todd McMullen’s cinematography? Completely fitting. S1 in particular – still blows me away.
More proof of: who knows why anything works?
